Lee Seong-A

Park Su-Hyun
Abstract
As interest for psychosocial occupational therapy has been recently growing, interest for Mental Health Act for patients with mental illness is increasing as well. The purpose of this study is to confirm the outline of amendment to Mental Health Act published on March 19th, 2010 and to present advice on the issues related to the occupational therapy and tasks of occupational therapists.
Main contents of amended Act emphasize the role of local governments for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of mental illness, and add the occupational therapy for hospitalized patients. Even if the enforcement regulations of amended Act add tasks of occupational therapists, it has problem of the terms that use the occupational therapy as occupational treatment. In addition, it has a contradiction between laws in which mental health professional staffs who do not include occupational therapists and occupational therapists perform together in their own tasks in occupational therapy specified in the medical technicians Act.
Thus, we would like to propose the need for the amendment on mental health Act which adds the contents accurately reflecting the task about occupational therapy using ¡°work¡± as a therapeutic tool of mental health rehabilitation and securing the clear criteria and expertise of task and role of occupational therapists.
